North Avenue to Roosevelt Road

In March 2003, the Valley View CSS Team was formed and they met with IDOT for the first time in April 2003.  Meetings were also held with IDOT in June and August.

We have published a document that itemizes the resident's concerns and design requests for Route 53.

In August 2003, the Lombard CSS Teams were formed.  IDOT was supportive of their formation.  The first meeting at IDOT headquarters was held with representatives from all CSS Teams, The Morton Arboretum, The DuPage County Forest Preserve District, and DuPage County Department of Transporation.

In September through November 2003, IDOT engineers met six times with Lombard CSS Teams .

In November 2003, Route 53 Neighbors United wrote a letter to the Governor with 400 signatures requesting consideration of a three-lane design for Route 53.  The Governor has seen it and has forwarded it to a senior staff member; we are awaiting a response.

Also in November 2003, IDOT Engineers informed residents they could no longer effectively promote the requested modifications for the north segment upward within the IDOT organization.

In December 2003 we asked the Village Boards, both Glen Ellyn and Lombard to sign their names to the three-lane petition letter in support and send it to the Governor.  Also the Glen Ellyn CSS Teams were formed at IDOT's request.  The Governor never responded to us directly in writing. One of our members did receive a letter from Secretary of Transportation Tim Martin in response to her letter requesting a three-lane for Route 53.  The answer to her request was "No."

Throughout 2003 and 2004 we worked with residents, IDOT and other agencies to influence the five-lane wide design presented at the public hearing for Route 53 from North Avenue to Roosevelt Road.

In May 2004, representatives of Route 53 Neighbors United along with District 4 County Board member John Noel, met with IDOT to discuss IDOT's plans for the section of Route 53 between Roosevelt and North Avenue.

On June 1, 2004, IDOT appointed Diane O'Keefe as District 1 Engineer, replacing John Kos.  Diane has a good reputation with respect to CSS.  Read our letter of introduction form 53 Neighbors United.

On August 19, 2004, the Public Hearing for Route 53 north of Roosevelt Road was held.  We published a brochure to educate neighbors and had a booth at the public hearing.
